hi, I have a hp probook 450 g2 here which does not turn on, however when I plug a charger into it , the light near the power port flashes white and the caps lock and power button both remain solid white , the laptop does nothing if I press the power button.
I have tried using a differnet power adapter which works on another laptop of the same model, I have tried it without the battery, I have also tried removing both battery and mains cord while pressing and holding the power button for around 30 seconds ,it still behaves the same afterwards

any ideas what's causing this?

My first action would be to re-seat the RAM. Looking at a picture of that machine the RAM modules are under a panel on the bottom of the computer. Take them both out and then put them back in making sure they are both seated correctly in their connectors.

Try RAM reseat. I'd suspect a short somewhere like a USB port or maybe even keyboard. Might be bad motherboard but usually HP's flash the caps lock when that happens. Try it with HDD disconnected and keyboard disconnected.

right, tried reseating the ram as well as putting the single stick of ram into the other slot with the same results s before. I also just tried removing the keyboard and hdd which also produces the same result. how would I make sure there wasn't anything shorting the usbs? I have had a look inside the ports and cant seen anything obvious in them

That would be difficult without specialist equipment to plug the mother board into. If it was a desktop I would be taking the motherboard out of the case and setting it up on a bench with power etc and do some continuity and voltage checks. That is infinitely more difficult to do with a laptop. I think now you have performed just about as many checks that you can do and it could be time to take it to a computer tech. I would just try to boot a linux distro installed on a DVD or usb stick but it does look like it could possibly be a motherboard or CPU fault and quite possibly not worth repairing. I hope you have backed up your important files. If you do decide to scrap the machine and you haven't backed up your files it would still be possible to retrieve them as long as the hard drive is still working. That would be a whole new post though really.
