i'm working on my friends computer. i just got done reinstalling windows on her hp pavilion 762n.
the audio is not working and is listed under 'other devices' in the device manager
i'm unable to find the audio driver on hp's website and trying to automatically update the driver has not worked either.
can anyone gimme a hand with this?

My normal route is to download the driver from the computer manufacturer's website. Many times they come in self-extracting EXE files. If you have WinRAR, you can extract these files by simply right clicking them and extracting as you would a compressed file.

Once you have access to the files, open Device Manager, double click the driver in question. Now tell it you wish to install/reinstall the driver, you don't want connect to MS at this time, take the Advanced route, specify location, and find the INF. Tyically these are located in a folder like ../DriverFolder/Driver/XP/blah.inf or something along those lines.

MOST of the time this works better than simply trying to use some kind of installer.

Also, if this method still won't work, sometimes finding generic drivers may work better. Since it's sound, you can sometimes find generic AC'97 drivers, or find drivers made for whatever chipset the mobo has. CPUz should tell you what the computer holds if you don't know right off.
