How to transfer files between computers

A very simple and easy question: I have got two computers, both are connected to the internet on the same modem. I want to transfer files between the two computers without burning CD's and DVD's or using some sort of external memory. How?

I've heard its possible either by the use of a cable - in this case, what kind of cable and how much does it cost, and how fast will it transfer files?

Or... by setting up a network that connects the two computers via the modem. If any pro would be able to explain how this is done, i'd be very happy.

Thanks!

Run the network set up wizard on one of your PCs and save the file to a disk. Choose a workgroup and all the options. Then take that disk over to the other computer and rerun that set up, it will mirror the settings and network your PCs automatically through the wizard.

after it is set up, you can just use windows explorer to map out the shares and copy/paste files.

I'm not sure if he has the cable yet...

You need a crossover cable to transfer files between two computers if you don't have a router. The transfer speeds should be fairly good.

You just need an ethernet cable and they only cost around four or five dollars/pound from your local computer store.

I don't know much about cables, but is a crossover cable the one you use to plug in the internet?

And is it possible to use Firewire to transfer between computers?

1) No, a crossover calbe is not required in every situation, only when going strictly peer to peer directly. If going through a switch or any other kind of networking hardware/drop a patch cable is needed most of the time. Cross overs really are only needed from direct NIC to NIC connections. Even most modern switches have autsensing ports so cross over cables aren't even required with those.

2) Yes it is possible to network via firewire, but I wouldn't really try it on the windows platform since it doesnt have huge amounts of support for it. FW networking works better on other platforms, but overall using actual CAT5 cable with networking hardware is still the best solution.
