How to transfer data between two computers?

I'm upgrading to a new computer so will want to move a lot of files across. I assume I will just need a network cable? If I hook the two comps up I would hope that each computer would appear in the other's My Computer or something...although I have a suspicion it might not be this easy. How does it work?

Basically, you get a Cat5e cable (Ethernet to Ethernet) and hook up one in each computers' end. Then, you run the network wizard on both computers in order for both of them to recognize each other on both ends. Simple :)

P.S. When I did this, instead of running the network wizard on both computers, I uninstalled the drivers for each network card device on the two computers, hooked them up with the cable, and then it installs it all by itself, and SHOULD network it at the same time...

if you had a router you can just send everything over on a network. if you are connecting two computers, you need a crossover cable.

That's the one! Yeah, it's called a crossover cable, which is the cable I have (I think :P).

yeah the crossover cable is identical to the regular cat5e cable except the colors are arranged in a different order. allows you to connect two similar devices.

there are a few ways:

1.) Take a crossover cable and hook one port into each computers LAN port. You dont even need to run the setup wizard, just make an ip for each of them (192.168.0.4 and 192.168.0.5)

2.) If you have firewire on both computers, simply buy a firewire cord, connect them, and then transfer the files.

3.) Make CD's or DVD's and copy the data that way, or use an external hard drive.

Take your hard drive out of your old comptuer, stick it in to your new computer... transfer from hard drive to hard drive. No need to buy any new cables.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I'll go the cable route - its a lot of data to be tranferred so CD's are out of the question, and I don't want the hassle of transferring the hard drive. I *think* I have a crossover cable, me and my brother used to hook up two computers to play total annihilation back in the good old days. The cable in my hands has two connectors on either end, I'm assuming so you can choose the applicable connector the appicable hole in the computer (technical talk). They're all "innies" if you know what i mean, not pronged.

The small one looks like it would fit in the serial port, is this the cable I want? Thanks

if you look at both of the ends they should look like the picture below.

lol, they should both be the same size. Infact, each end should look the same...:)

The ends are the same. But on either end there are two pluggy-in things - I assume this is so you can choose how you will connect to the computer. one of them fits fine into the serial port. I've used them before for gaming so will it work for transferring data? Hope that clears it up

Seems like you got NULL modem cables ... yeah they can be used :)
