Hellow, I am a telus user, and i have D-Link DSL-604+. In the past few month, my little brother has been doing badly in school and my parents want me to block MSN to access internet along with some other games.

I tried going to 192.168.0.1 to set up the filter.

However, i had no luck.

Would someone kindly give me some guidance. THANK YOU!!!

P.S. i would like to use msn, along with my mom. so i dont want to block it completely, just on my bro's computer.
one more note: i use wireless internet so i dont know if the ip of his computer changes or anything

THANKS A LOT! again.>!!

You can block the IP he's using, but he probably knows how to get around that... What I would do is set a password on the router and don't give him the password, that way the router won't allow him access to the 'net. :)

Disable DHCP and manually assign IPs to all the computers. The only sure way he doesn't get around the router would be to simply not assign an IP to his computer :P

I only have a DLink Access-Point, not a router, so I'm not totally sure what all they can do with regards to blocking. :-/ I think our Motorola can actually block certain sites...

Well, is he software savy where he would know how to get into the settings of softwares and stuff to check for changes? If not, you can put a firewall on his pc and block all internet access. If he is, you can also do the same, but look into a firewall with password protection features; one example is zonealarm where you can put a password on it, so w/o knowing it, can't access or do any changes.

Other than that, if you couldn't get in because you typed in that ip address, try it with 1.1 instead of 0.1. Not sure quite what you really meant whether you didn't know how to do it or you wasn't able to get in.

i m sorry for being so confusing basically, i want to block MSN from his computer to access the internet by blocking w/e inside the firewall. I do not want to touch his computer, he has 2 layers of passwords...

THANKS AGAIN!

You could block all computers from those sites, but then make your and your mom's computers have pass through access.

Well, you can figure out what port MSN uses and block that via router configuration page (usually your default gateway ip)

ahh, thanks jet & motorxdude, how do i find out what port they are using and how do i block it from the router...i have gotten in the router successful because i port forwarded my bt b4..thanks

Ok, which router do you have?

And first and foremost, you would want to give him a set ip address. If not, his ip will keep changing if it is set to automatic detect and your ip blocking and all that for his connection will be useless. Have you setup everyone on their own ip address so far?

How about a parental control software such as cyber patrol or net nanny?? Put it on his computer, as long as that is the only one he uses. You have to pay for most software, but it might be worth it. Then you can put the sites under blocked sites. I was testing out Cyber Patrol for a while to write a review, and I thought the software was great, the cost is the only negitive part.

Ok, so which router do you have? If it's a linksys, I might be able to help you more directly. If it's something else, I'm not sure, but just taking guesses at the settings.

Ok, you need to go somewhere on your router settings and find like an information page or status page that shows the router's:
Default Gateway (most common 192.168.1.1)
Starting ip address (most likely 192.168.1.100)
Subnet Mask (most common 255.255.255.0)
Preferred DNS server
Alternate DNS server

So, for example if your information was like those above, you would enter it into the TCP/IP properties of your network cards. Either the "LOCAL AREA CONNECTION" if you are wired or your wireless network card if you are on wireless. Looks like this:
just an example picture. not how's your's should look like.

tcp-ip-properties.gif

As you can see, the first 3 you just enter them in. For the IP ADDRESS, make sure as an example, if it started at 192.168.1.100, make sure you are using anything after 100. Example, 192.68.1.101, 102, 105, etc..

Then, find the DNS servers and put those in.

Ok. I have done the first step. However, i have a question. Do i need to do the second step (the one with the picture to change from "obtain an Ip address automatically" to "use the following ip address") on my brother's computer?

THANKS!

Yes. Do it on all the computers. If you don't set it to that, it's automatically getting an ip randomly, so it will always change. So if you did 101 on yours, do 102 on his, 103 on your families, etc. Everything else should be the same, just the ip for each individual pc changing.
