how to setup cat6

Hi guys. I want to know how to set up CAT6 for my home network. Me and my brother's ethernet jack support 1000 MBPS so we can do it but my dad's ethernet jack doesn't support it. So i'm trying to buy an ethernet card for him. Will this card work?

And what does Wake On LAN mean?
My sister has a D-Link Wireless 108AG Desktop Adapter but will that go at the speed of CAT6? I also need to get a router to do my upgrade. This is the one that I've had in mind. Please tell me if there are any better ones for a reasonable price.

This was the only 10/100/1000M wireless router they had at newegg. Also, what is the difference between WAN and LAN? It says 1 10/100M WAN port and 4 10/100/1000M LAN ports.

WAN = Wide Area Network (typically the internet) This is basically your DSL line

LAN = Local Area Network - this is your home network

Wake On Lan - not used much really, if a PC is in standby or sleep mode, it can be "woken up" by a server, not really useful in your environment
 
Well I think you understand what these do, and their limitations... But let me explain. IF you purchased all of these connectors, the cable and the ethernet cards... You would indeed get 1000M between computers (given the wireless routers ability to do what it says it can do), BUT you would not get any more speed from the internet than you do now(unless your on some Super connection). With todays speeds you could not approach a download or upload speed over the internet to approach speeds of 1000M per sec.

So in actuality IF everything worked perfect (which it wont), you would be able to get movie or music or other files from a LOCALLY network PC ONLY.

Wan=Internet Side of internet (anything before the router)
Lan=Local side of internet (anything after the router)
 
WAN=Wide Area Network
LAN=Local Area Network

WAN=Internet
LAN=LAN Party :P


that router looks good, as for the wireless, im not sure, but on LAN it will be decent

if there is only a 10/100 WAN conneciton then i will get the same internet conenciton right? is there a router with a 10/100/1000 WAN port to get better internet connection. i have the fastest internet service on cox and i want to see how good it is because they said it was supposed to b 10x faster then the one i had before but i don't think im taking advantage of all its speed.
if there is a router like that plz tell me or give me a link

Ok even if ALL of this worked perfect, and you A SUPER FAST download from cox that would be UP to 15Mbps... This would be extremely expensive... I would assume your connection to be around 3.0Mbps. Which only means that your connection could run up to 3.0.. but it will really run about 2.0 regularly. Find out what speed you have right now, get a dsl speed test. Your equipment wont be slowing it down...

i did the bandwitch test and it came out really good. i hope that if i get cat6 and a 10/100/1000m wan router (if there is such thing) that i could get faster.:D

you can't see it too clearly but if you look closely u can see 17.7
so im thinking that if i get a 10/100/1000 router and cat6 it'll go faster
I also kept doing the test over and over again and it came out to 13.?? 12.?? and 15.??

Your number 17 doesnt really mean anything... I need to know WHAT it is referring to...

Ex. I ran at 100 yesterday....

if you internet is only 17Mbps...

If you have a pipe that is 17" going into anything your only getting 17" of water pressure. No matter if you have 1000" pipe on the end of that 17" pipe it isn't going to give you more speed.

But your computer to computer speed will be 1000Mbps. IE: File Transfers from PC to PC but Internet will only be a total of 17Mbps / the machines on the network.
