How to play CounterStrike in Surround Sound?

I have just recently got myself a new sound card and speakers - Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS and Creative Inspire T7700 7.1 speakers.
In the configuration audio menu in CS, I have ticked both EAX and A3D but when playing, only my front side speakers and my rear speakers actually played any sound. when i unclicked these two, sound played from all 7 speakers. is this normal?
and also, do i need to do anything so that the sound i hear corresponds to the environment of the game?
example - if i throw a grenade and then turn around i will only hear the explosion with my rear speakers.
currently it doesnt seem that i'm getting much of the actual surround sound in that I cant really tell which direction gunshots etc. are coming from.
could this possibly be because I have my speakers setted up wrongly?
if so how far should they be from each other?
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

thechdude - do you mean what type of audio settings there are?
if so, as i said above there are two - EAX and A3D.
and i have already tried enabling these settings.

elmarcorulz - what do you mean by setting my sound up appropriately in windows?
I can get all 7 speakers to play music etc. by just cant get them to play surround sound as I said above.

if the music comes out of all, then ignore me and dont adjust anything in windows. have alook around the sound option ingame, and see what there is.a nd also try different combinations of options

I'm pretty sure the Half Life engine does not support surround sound. I know source does though. In source if you go to options, sound, and advanced, you can select your speaker system.

EDIT: I just looked it up and I don't think Counterstrike supports 5.1, just stereo. It splits it into the other channels though. Remember its a old game (1998). COunterstrike Source does support 5.1 and 7.1 (It helps a lot).
