How to link two computers together????

I own a laptop and a desktop computer, the laptop being my “main” or “favorite” computer. The laptop was “out of order” for some time, and now it’s up and running, but now half of my things are on the desktop PC.

I would like to know if there is a way to “link” both computers together to share or transfer files.

I’ve read some articles about this on the web, which talk about doing this with a crossover Ethernet cable, but none of this articles are too concrete, and I don’t know how useful this method could be for what I want.

All I need is anything more efficient than transferring these files with my usb drive, that’s annoying…

I would be thankful for any help, but don't be too technical, please, I am not a Computer Engineer.:)

Well if you have a router, a hub or a switch a crossover cable is not needed. All of these things can create a network or a LAN (Local Area Connection).

The cross over cable is easy to use, and is only required when two computers are hooked directly to one another.

To do this all you need to do is plug the cross over cable into both ports. Enable file and printer sharing for the network connection (an internet connection can also be shared this way), then share a folder (right click and enable it).

If you need more clarity on this let me know.

crossover cables are the perfect solution if you want to transfer files between the 2 computers, i do that all the time
i have a crossover cable in my bag whereever i go. :D
so it's really simple
get a cable and be sure it's cross not straight . (i don't wanna get into the explaination of that) but it wont work if it's straight
anyway
there is an Ethernet port in your laptop and hopefully desktop
just plug it in on both computers
now it's time to setup the network
go to Control Panel\Network Connections
Right click on Local Area Network then click on properties
double click on Internet protocol

choose Use the following IP address
and then enter IP address for example 10.10.10.1
and subnet mask for example 255.255.0.0
do the same thing on the other computer but with a different IP for example 10.10.10.2
then if you want to share any folder just right click on it and click on sharing and security
mark share this folder on the network
now to access this folder form the other computer
just open Start\Run and write \\10.10.10.1
there you go

You can also use a serial cable, if you haev a serail port on each, if not you can get adaptors/pci cards. It can also be done with a parallel port and cable too. This is how i used to hook up by 3 computers to transfer lots of things.

Funny! Ijust noticed there is a networking forum, I think this was supposed to go there!

Anyways, found helpo here !!
