How to Eliminate background noise

ive got onboard sound with an upto date driver (to the best of my knowleadge will check when i get home) , from what i understand onboard sound is always subject to a certain amount of background noise, may not be an issue on newer motherboards.
by back ground noise i mean the sound of cds spinning up, hard drives and electrical singals on the motherboard.
these noise dont interfere with the output of audio but is quite gaps these noise's are present , especially through headphones
any ideas on how to eliminate it
thanks

get a cheap sound card? it could also be cause by some processes running i the backgroung. whenever i have f@h running, there is a high pitched whine, and i have a dedicated sound card.

Coil whine can come from any copper coils on any component. all new motherboards cover these coils in glue or something to stop/reduce the coil whine, don't know about graphics cards but my 4850 didn't have coil whine. the last card that did was my X1650 Pro.

but it only does it when f@h is open, not when i play games, or run 3dmark with my 9800gt oc from 600 to 750, and even if f@h is paused or stopped, just as long as its open, it makes the noise.

To guarentee all whines and noises disappear you really need a sound card that outputs digitally, and then a pair of speakers that can convert it to analogue. You can also try to find a more 'pro-audio' orientated sound card that outputs on two balanced 1/4 inch jacks (although for this you'd need a small mixer of some sort) - this way any interference imposed on the output is cancelled out. Actually, cheap solution is a USB soundcard - all the digital to analogue conversion stuff is carried out away from the computer.

All of this of course assumes that the interference is after the digital to analogue conversion, which it must be unless it's one completely buggered computer.
