How To Convert mpg file for free?

Hey guys,
I recorded a video... The video is in mpg format, and I want to convert to any file (e.g. imov) only so I can remove specific sections of the video. Simple as that, no special editing required.

I have a MacBook Air. I haven't edit a video before, so I am clueless about what program I should be using for conversion/editing.

How can I convert the mpg video to an editable format (like imov)? And upload on youtube.

Some of the conversion programs require that I pay money, and I have tried for hours trying to convert this format.

Why specifically imov?

The format doesn't matter. I want to remove parts of the video, and to do that I need a video-editor program. I have a macbook air, and I have the iMovie program to edit it, but the video needs to be in imov format, and not mpg, in order to be edited.

I'm new to editing, so if anyone can recommend a program to edit and/or converter for my situation, please do... Thank you.
