a router is basically designed exactly for that purpose at the consumer level, but there's a host of other problems you can run into, if things don't work out correctly, post again and tell us the problem and we'll help you out. BTW, you have dsl or cable or another always on connection right?

you could use a switch or a router. A switch is a router without the wireless part.

Not quite. Routers come in either wired or wireless. A switch won't route Internet traffic, and is thus not what he needs.

A router is by far the best way, but if don't want to buy one, you can network the two computers via a crossover cable, plug the Internet connection into your main computer and share the connection. This will mean that the computer you have plugged the Internet connection into will need to be on for you to use the Internet on either computer.

cheapest way i think is a RJ45 crossover cable, that way you dont need anything apart from the cable.

EDIT: INTERNET to one PC then crossover cable from PC to PC

Well, do you want to use wireless? If the two computers are near each other, wired is fine. If you can't conveniently run a cable to each computer, wireless may be your best choice. Obviously, a wireless router will cost more, as will wireless cards for the PCs. It's also somewhat slower than a wired network, which isn't a problem for sharing Internet, but will be a slowdown for sharing large files.

Wireless provides more flexibility if you intend to move the computers, or buy a laptop. Keep in mind that wireless routers will include wired points as well, so if you buy a wireless router you can use a combination of wireless and wired devices.

depending on the modem you have, you could just go wireless. If your modem has built in wireless..you will save money

My friend does this all the time when he comes over. When i have internet he plugs a regular Lan cable into my computer and i bridge the two connections, thats also how i get a connection for xbox live, since i dont want to buy a 30$ wireless thing for my xbox

I think the easyiest way for you to share the internet would be to buy a crossover cable and connect it from your modem to the computer you want to share with. that way you will always have a connection as long as you don't turn of the modem. If you want to use xbox live just unplug the crossover cable from the computer and put it in the xbox. also you dont need to use a crossover cable you can just use straight through if thats easier. you could also stick a wireless NIC in your computer however if you intend to do a lot of downloading wireless isnt as fast also you will still have to but a cable for your xbox online.

Actually, wireless would be just as fast as wired unless you have a connection that would be higher than 54 Mbps like a T1 or something. Most cable is only 4 Mbps and DSL is at most 1 Mbps. However, wired tends to be a little easier to set-up and easier to maintain. So, if your computers are right next to each other, save yourself the $10 extra (unless you can get one on sale, which shouldn't be hard) and the extra hassle of wireless and just get a simple wired router.

Assuming you have dual NICs....otherwise youd have to buy another NIC... not to mention to access internet from PC2 you need to have PC1 on... which costs money for electrcity so really, the annual cost of doing that might be significantly higher than you think

1. Is 1.544MBit so "on paper" thats not a problem
2. Even though both 802.11b and 802.11g (and 802.11a too) are well over the onpaper bandwidth supplied by most peoples connections, we all know wireless damn near never works at full bandwidth :)

My experience tells me that wireless networks can be a pain in the ass to maintain, especially if you dont know what your doing. Go for the most simple rout and use a cable, its fast and easy
