I have a maraniz model ta 100 receiver and Panasonic Sb-HDA710 Speakers and the three smaller speakers for 5.1 audio.
I'm a noob so please talk in noob language
I also only want to spend $50 on a sound card I'm pretty low on money

Onboard audio is okay if you're not an audiophile, you have some decent audio equipment yes? A soundcard will make quite a noticable difference,

One thing I need to know, does your computer have a PCI-E slot? Have a look at the Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio, the regular PCI version can do 5.1, the pci-e version (same one i have) can do 5.1 and it has optical in/out.

look here:

The marantz is a stereo receiver meaning it only has 2 channels therefore you cannot achieve 5.1 surround sound with this setup. You would need four more channels to drive the subwoofer (minus 1 channel if you have a powered subwoofer), center speaker and the two surround speakers.

How are you connecting your computer to the receiver? If you're using coaxial or optical out (both digital) then onboard and soundcard should be identical, as your receiver will be acting like a sound card. If you're using analog output however, then the soundcard would make a difference.

You needn't to pay $50 for a sound card, shopping online, just $10 you can get a great sound card.

$10 will get you something equal to or worse than HD onboard audio. The cheapest half decent soundcard I can think of would be the Xonar DS, which is about $50.
