How much do you charge?

I'm guessing of few forum members here offer some PC repair services where they live, I'm just wondering, what are your rates?
BestBuy charges $300 for in-house repair, and $130 for a diagnosis.

FYI: You're only allowed one account on this forum

I work for a local repair shop.

$40 Diagnostic Fee
$50 Data Backup
$89 Virus Removal/General PC Cleanup
$125 Operating System Reload
$225 Hard Drive Replacement & OS Reload
$250 LCD Replacement (laptop)/Motherboard Repair

Our motherboard repairs are sent out to a repair facility in NYC called" L2 Computing". They are very good!

Thanks, I just want to compare rates/ prices, I'm not looking for someone to fix anything for me. I created that second account a while ago because for some reason I couldn't sign in on one of my computers with this account (so I thought maybe if I created another one it would work).

Is the $125 Operating System Reload just a reformat of HDD and reinstall of OS?

I was talking to a student in my class, he's opening a shop with 2 of his buddies (a Bubble Tea/ pastry shop) and they will also be offering virus removal for only $15! I thought that was insanely low, seeing as most PC Repair shops charge $100 or more, and I've cleaned out some people's PCs for $90 and also $45.

I usually charge 25-30 bucks for malware removal, just depending on how bad its infected. 75 bucks for a new system build and to install windows and updates.

your kinda expensive.

your kinda expensive.

I'm offended.

Take a look at best buy AND our local competitors. The computer shop in the town next to ours is crazy expensive and they don't even do any work.

$50 diag fee
$300 virus removal
$350 motherboard replacement
$300 is their magic number. People pay it and they don't even fix the problem.

We're in business to make money, and people will pay for what they need and don't know about. Service takes time and my boss has to pay us techs, pay for the parts, and make a profit on parts.

your kinda expensive.
Not really. That's a fairly good rate for a local repair shop. There is a lot of cost to cover. Technicians aren't cheap for one thing. Neither is equipment, etc. Best Buy charges $100 just for data backup.

The company I work for charges about the equivalent in NZ dollars.

Diagnostic - $45-60
Data Transfer - $75
PC Assembly (hardware only) - $40
PC Assembly (plus OS & drivers) - $70
Virus Removal - $100
Notebook Screen Replacement - $300-500 (depending on the screen)

Diagnostic fee is waived if the customer decides to go ahead with repair/work.

Yeah, our diag fee is pre-paid, and then subtracted from the final repair cost. That way if a customer doesn't want to fix their machine, we don't waste our time for nothing.

I haven't been in the biz for about 6 years, but 6 years ago the company I worked for charged the following:

out of warranty repair flat rate $90
upgrade charges:
hard drive: $40
RAM: $25
other drives: $35
System build from scratch: $125

Then we did by the hour work on some things. Then when I was a contractor I charged $100 an hour minimum 1 hour. That was all networking/server stuff on site that I would go to client's business or home. My most common thing I did was install and set up WiFi (and secure it) in people's homes.

Now, unless it is a job that is going to pay me $100 an hour for side work I really am just not interested. Unless it is for a friend, then I work for dinner and a few beers.

I guess I also traded work to a buddy of mine who is a tattoo artist. I got a free tattoo he got two laptops fixed.

Defineatly not as professional as some of you all, but I do a little side work for locals (only one on my side of the county). Really depends on their attitude (reserve the right to double labor for Jackas#es).

Generally my system is 1/3 the parts for labor. Say they want win 7 installed from a System builders pack. Thats 99 dollars, so their labor is 33 dollars. Certain things I will flatrate though. Say complete system build is 150, and home networking (wired and wireless), as well as Virus removal is 7.25/ hour. The way I see it, no one will pay me more than that at my age in a bussiness, so why charge more than that to the locals?.

wolfeking, I basically do the same thing as you, except my prices are a little different ($65 for virus removal, software help).

Keep in mind that when someone relies on this for a living, has an actual company with a store, pays for technicians, they have a lot more expenses then someone who fixes computers on the side. Many people would rather go to a company that looks reputable then calling someone they never met to come into their home.

WOW thats alot of money here in South Florida geek mobile service is $49 a hour and most of the time there done in 45min. Anything virus removal OS system repair hardware anything.
