I want to be able to access my files from any computer on the internet, without having to use a program like "go2mypc". I want to be able to just type in a name like http://12.230.40.2 or http://www.mypc.com. Do any of you know how to do this?

I have a Belkin Router and a DSL modem.

if u wanna access your computer thro the web browser(http://12.230.40.2 or http://www.mypc.com) all u need to do is register a domain name (ip address) this u can do thro register.com or no-ip.com if u don wanna pay (i've not tried it yet), and secondly ur computer needs to be a web server too u can install IIS in ur Xp system.

I found about 10 software programs that supossibly let you access your files by creating a server on our computer. I haven't tried anything out yet, but if you have an idea of what will work, please tell me. Thanks

I don't believe so. I'm pretty sure it's only available for windows XP Pro.

You're right. Windows XP Professional has IIS on the CD, but it isn't part of the "Typical Install". If you have XP Pro installed and can't find IIS, chances are you need to insert the XP Pro disc and go to "Add/Remove Progs" and then to windows components.

Or easier yet, when the CD auto loads, you should have the option of adding additional Windows componenets.

you will also need some type of updating software (I use directupdate) and a dns server (www.zoneedit.com) since i'm assuming you don't have a static ip address (one that never changes) otherwise as soon as your ip address changes the server goes down. note: this is only if you want a "www .'somthing'. com" address, if you want to always have to remember your ip address then it's not necessary
