How can I network

Hi, I have 2 computers both with networking built-in the motherboards. I have installed the latest network drivers for both computers and when i connect the yellow crossover cable from one computer to another i get no response. What do i have to do to get both of the computers to recognise each other so i can share files. Both of them are windows XP home. My main computer (this one) has direct access to broadband and the other computer is on its own. I want to be able to have that computer connected to the internet as well.

Personally, I would invest in a hub/switch or even a router and network that way...

If you must use direct connect...well you should get something from the computers...lights or something. I can't recall exactly what protocol's are required, but I would think XP would have some wizards to help you alone...

Yeh I know that they do but they dont seem to work. once when i tried to set one up it knocked my internet connection off and i had to reinstall the whole thing again. Are there any guides on how to do this?

Um...I think you just messed up a setting... All you have to do is assign an IP address to each computer. Most setups use 192.168.X(1-3).XXX(1-254). You're NIC proporties should have TCP/IP, Client for MS networks, QoS, and possibly File and Print shareing(the default setup) And that should be it... Now if you use a router, no settings are required as most have DHCP
