How can i make a server?

Alright, im have enough computer parts to make another computer. I want to make it a home server. Im not sure how to do this, or what i wouldnt need. If you could help me out in anyway i would appreciate it. Thanks
 
Ok, well first off do you have a router? If you do, the easiest way to make a server is to take the computer that you built, install windows 2000 or newer on it, hook it up to your router either wirelessly or wired. Once you do that, run the network setup wizard (assuming you have Win XP), use the same workgroup for every computer, and make sure that file sharing is enabled. Once you do that, the computer should be seen on the network, if it is then you can go into the "my computer" on the server pc, and share all the drives that you want to. Then you should be able to see them from other PC's.
 
What do plan on doing with this server? Are you making one just to have one, or do you have a lot of computers in your home?

If the latter, do you have then networked yet?

The hardest part of a server, IMO, is the software-- whether to invest in say, Win 2k or 2k3 server or go with a *nix and which one.

If hes installing a server on a small network with only a few computers, then Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro will be fine.
 
yes i have a router, basicly i am just going to be using the router for sharing files between all the computers in our house. I have both Windows XP and 2000 that i can install on the server. Ill post tomorrow when i have it completed.
 
If you have an 'always on' connection, you should use a firewall. I built a dedicated firewall from a PII I had bouncing around using Smoothwall. ClarkConnect is a similar product that also acts as a server. You might take a look at that.
 
Yea i will probly use Xp, i tried ClarkConnect, but i couldnt properly configure my ethernet etc. When i went to turn on the computer i want to use for the server nothing happened, and i realized i dont have a CPU! I will probly get one by this weekend. Ill post on how it goes
 
wait, im confussed are you trying to make a network for all your comptuers, or a server for things like people connecting to it from the internet?
 
Im going to make a server so that i can put files on the server and access the files from other computers in the house.
