hi all,

i just wanna ask about how can i create a password for one computer so that another computer in the same network places who want to access the file in that computer must have that password first before they reach the file?please advice me.TQ in advance

If you want to make a password for the whole computer
there is an easy way, you only have to set a password on the guest account
if you don't know how to do that, try this
Start-cmd
net user guest PASSWORD

I don't think you can password protect a file in XP Home (if thats what you're using). It's either shared or not shared, however, you can password protect a zip file within your shared file.

Or you can make it a "hidden" share. You can make it to where you have to map to the network location. For example you would not be able to see the folder //computername/share/hidden but you could map directly to it.

thanx for all answer..

hi all,

thnx..but can anybody suggest me another easy way to make sure the data shared in network can be reach by certain person using password?TQ in advance

My solution to this was PGP Disk. I don't think its free tho. It allows you to create an encrypted file on your share drive. The file size is up to you (i used to have a 10GB one) When its decrypted, it shows up as a drive with all your files in it. To open it, open your share drive, Cllick on the PGP Disk file, put in password, the file opens as a disk. It was the only way I could figure out how to do what you want. If you use the free PGP only, you can create encrypted files for others to open, but it sucks to decrypt a file and have to save it it to your drive to see it. One word of caution, DON'T lose your password!!! Also, you have to install PGP on all PC's accessing your file. XP pro offers file encryption.

thanx crypto.what do you mean by PGP Disk?PGP is shortform for?

Pretty Good Privacy. It's an industry standard for encryption. Download from the link below for free, then upgrade to the PGP Disk. BTW- This is not the most user freindly tool, it takes a bit to learn. Very powerful encryption tool. DON'T forget your password, your data will be gone forever!

This link may take you to version 9, it's a free trial, but after 30 days, it's the same as the freeware. Some functions inactive. With a trial, you may have a chance to try the disk feature. I have not used version 9, I have 8.

POCA - To remove the password, you simply click the zip file once , then go to the file menu and select remove password. You have to enter the password to remove it
