Hooked up through computer speakers

I was talking to a guy once and he was telling me he was into dealing with speakers. He told me that many of the old speakers sound much better than the modern ones. He also told me he had a pair of speakers hooked up through an old pair of computer speakers. I just ignored him at the time, but now I am unsure of what he meant. Does he have the speakers removed from the computer speakers and the 2 wires leading to his bigger speakers? or is it something else I would have no idea about?

ps. I can't ask him because I only saw him once and I will probably never see him again.

What? That kind of makes no sense to me at all :P. Are you sure he didn't mean that he had an old pair of computer speakers hooked up to his computer?

He could be gutting a set of PC speakers to use the onboard amp on old stereo speakers, but the amp on typical PC speakers is puny

He could also mean he had two old speakers on an equally old amplifier, the problem with that is old amplifiers dont always work because the connectors oxidize (Copper oxidizes instead of rusting) making the left or right channel not work, produce static or any other bad effects

But what this person said is sound in theory, but is a bit more effort then buying a subwoofer for example

I had an old stereo hooked up to my computer back home (im overseas atm). I just had to buy a set of RCA cables and an adapter for them to plug into the speaker jack in the back of the computer.

Maybe thats what he used?

Sorry to bump an older thread, but if someone wanted to invest in a rig like that where would they start? My dad has a receiver from at least the 70s in the garage and it works like a charm, I'd love to replicate that situation in my room.

well first thing you would need to do is verify that the older receiver works.if it basically works, and has some scratchyness when ya turn the volume or other control.that can be a simple fix with the product i linked to earlier called deoxit.

We have a pair of decent bookshelf speakers in the house, I just need a basic reciever/amp but don't know where to start (really don't have a big budget being a college student and all)
