Home WiFi questions

I have a few questions about setting up a wireless connection in my home. I know I should know this but I am not sure.

I currently have a desktop PC that is connected to my cable modem and there is no router invovled at this point in time. I have ordered a laptop with the internal wireless card blah blah blah. I will be getting rid of my desktop when this comes. I will be getting a wireless g router from my parents and here is my question. I know that the router needs to be hooked up to a computer to set it up at first. But lets say after this I want to go in the front room is it possible to have the router sending out the internet without it being set up to a computer>? So the only thing at my computer desk it my router and modem?? If this does not make sense let me know. Because If I need a computer connected at all times then I will keep my desktop.

I don't quite understand what your asking... I've never seen a router that needs to be connected to a computer. They all work just fine though their network(accessing the setup that way and what not.)

If you have cable internet, usally you don't have to do any settings with a router. It'll just pick everything up and work. DSL, you do have to configure a few things, but nothing major... However, if you just do like this, you don't configure any security features. If someone gets within your router's wireless range, they could easilly hack into your unsecured network and into your computer. Or they might just steal your internet as most people do ;)

Okay, I'll tell you what you need in order to set up an internet connection to your laptop.

First off, your modem is your source for the internet connection. The router that your parents are getting for you links straight to the modem. What your parents are getting you must be a combo router/access point (not just a router).

When you say that a router must be hooked up to a computer in order for it to work, you're wrong, it just needs to be hooked up to your modem, so, no computer required. But you are correct when you say that all you need on the computer desk is a router/access point connected to a modem.

After you set up the wireless router/access point to your modem, you will get a signal for your laptop. From there, you can go anywhere in your house and still have a connection to the internet, heck, you can even sit on your driveway and play (if the signal is strong enough).

I hope this clears things up for you.

Yes it needs to be hooked up to a pc to set it up at first.

No other computer needs to be hooked up for your laptop to connect to the wireless router. Think of the router as a small computer which is always on, and just sends out a signal.
