iv got a small home network that i have setup but there is one computer in it that doesnt wantto cooperate with me. i have four computers all connected through a d-link router. One of these computers (laptop running windows XP home sp2) will not connect to one of the others (also using XP home sp2). It can find it on the network but when i try to access a file it gives the message saying something like 'not accessible, might not have permission'. This also when trying to connect to the laptop from the other. Though the other 2 computers (running xp home sp2 and windows 98) can connect without problems to any of these comps on the network and the laptop can also connect to the other 2.

another thing that i thought was odd is that the computer the laptop cannot connect to cant ping itself.

i hope that you could understand all that.

any answers or ideas would be great.

Itself, how did you try this. What IP did you ping

Lets clear up a few questions, and see where we are.
1) are all the machines picking up IP addresses (internal)
2) Are they collectiong the internal IP address via DCHP
3) Is there a firewall on any of the machines (especially those with sp2 - which turns the firewall on by default)
4) If above is true, either disable it for the testing or allow files transfer for you networks
5) are all the networks on the same workgroup??
6) do they all have unique names
7) You need to ensure that the user you are logged on as has permission to access the remote machine. Easiest way to do this is to set up the same user on ALL the machines with the same password. So user jafog would have admin rights on all the pc's

how did you try this. What IP did you ping:
i got the ip by running command and using ipconfig. and pinged the ip address i got from that.

1) are all the machines picking up IP addresses (internal)

yes(i think they are)

all computers have windows firewall, except for comp the laptop cant connect which is using norton internet security 2005. though it is setup to let all computers on my network through.

i have tried disbling all firewalls still same problem

none of the computers are setup for multiple users. all just use that admin account.
