high-resolution webcam needed or some alternative

I need advice from someone with knowledge of current web cams and web cams soon to be developed. For a project I'm working on I need the highest resolution consumer grade webcam available. I know that Hewlett-Packard (I think) recently came out with a three megapixel webcam. I've done a search for four megapixel cameras, and I have come up with a few made by foreign companies. Do you know if any of the major web camera manufacturers will come out with 4 megapixel cameras anytime soon? If not, are there any alternatives? I want something like a web camera because you can take a still image and have it immediately saved on the hard drive. I know that some SLR and other professional cameras can be operated from a PC with specialized software, but that is a prohibitively expensive solution for me. If anyone knows any kind of solution along these lines please let me know.

Webcams are typically capped around 1.3MP or so simply because of streaming video limitations and the like. I'm sure there are higher quality ones around, but they are fairly rare. I'd look more into digital cameras with PC connection capabilities (not exactly sure what it'd be called) My Nikon D40 can be controlled and snap a picture right to the PC. However, if it matters, you can't see what's coming through the lens (though no live-view on that camera either...)

I am aware that some digital cameras allow that possibility, but it's mainly on higher end ones like SLRs. I am interested in web cameras because they are much cheaper. Are there any other options besides these two for what I need? I could use just a regular digital camera, but it's very inconvenient to have the plug and unplug it each time I need to upload images and to recharge the battery.
