Help! XP Problems! Locking Up/Loss of Internet!

Hey guys,

I have been searching everywhere and there are a variety of problems, I don't know if any of them are similar to mine. As cliche as it sounds, I really need some help, and believe me I have been working for days on this, and I'm not too horrible at computers myself.

What is happening: Well a couple nights ago when I was in the middle of a design, my computer went through the reboot process by itself, lost that design, was frustrating, shut the computer off for the night.

That morning, I realize that I have no internet (my wireless internet has been disabled, and all the time I try to enable it, it will not work, connection failed,) go to school, get back to troubleshoot it. I shut down the computer. First lock-up at Windows is Shutting Down.

After I restart it, still no internet, I run an AVG scan and a Spybot Search and Destroy scan, and a CCleaner run, well all seems well, I then lock up when I am working on something. Forced to straight hold the power button to shut it down, no ctrl alt delete, or just shut down.

So after that I run a system restore, it works! Computer starts up, and has internet, somewhat shaky though. Sometimes lose it for a minute. Then when I am going to bed thinking that worked, it freezes at Windows is Shutting Down again, and when I shut down and start it back up, no more internet.

So basically, I am locking up at times, always locking up every single time on Windows shut down, and need to system restore every time I want to get on the internet to start my computer up.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much for reading my novel,
Stefan

this is a tough one. bad ram?
dont take it from me though... im 14...

Random guess?, or ya got a reason?

I would say the motherboard or psu is failing, causing the computer to randomly shut off. But, since you have the internet problem, I have no idea. Sounds like some sort of virus. There are several members on here who can help you with viruses. I am working on learning, but am not yet knowledgeable to help with a virus. Someone else probably will.

Good Luck!

What's the OS? What sort of Internet connection are you using? Wireless?

Do you have automatic updates enabled? I'm thinking that maybe it's trying to install updates when you are shutting down. Do another System Restore, and then disable automatic updates immediately. Reboot it and see if it hangs. If it does, boot back up and do another system restore.

Then check your Startup entries via Start-->Run--> type "msconfig"

In the Startup tab, disable everything that you do not need running at startup. Then go to the Services tab and click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and disable all of the services you do not need running at startup. Then reboot and see if it hangs at shut down. Then post back here and let us know. ;)

Windows XP, using wireless with a Linksys card, the whole program is not running, i can system restore, i can be on for 30 mins then it will lock up and i have to system restore again, i will try what you said
