First, a few questions:

Are both computers hooked up to a router, switch or hub?

Have you set up the computers to be part of a "home or small office network" and created a workgroup?

Are both machines running either Windows XP Home SP2 or Windows XP Pro?

If so, you can right click on My Computer on the laptop and go to the system properties, click on the 'Remote' tab and check the box next to "allow users to connect remotely to this computer". Click on select remote users and add the users on laptop you want to be able to remote to.

On the desktop computer go to the start menu and select all programs > accessories> communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

Enter the Laptop Computer Name (found in system properties) enter one of the user names you allowed earlier and enter the password and for domain, enter the name of the workgroup (if you answered yes to my second question you will have a workgroup name which can be found from system properties, Computer Name tab).

thanx for all that...i'm still a little bit confused tho...i set up a workgroup on both of my computers...and my desktop is connected to a wireless router from dlink and my laptop is connected wirlessly...so i dont kno if i have to connect with a cable or not...i do have one...if its needed...my laptop is running xp pro and my desktop is running xp home...both updated but how do i add my desktop to my laptop...the desktop is the one i want to connect to and have access from my laptop. thanx for all the help but if you can be more specific since i am a newb...i dont quite understand a lot of stuff...and thanx a lot for replying i really appreciate the help.

You need to just reverse the computers in the last three paragraphs of my previous post..

Answer these questions by writing them down.
Q1: What is the name of the Desktop computer?
Q2: What is the user name and password on the desktop computer?
Q3: What is the name of the workgroup you set up?

On the desktop computer:

Right click on My Computer and go to the system properties, click on the 'Remote' tab and check the box next to "allow users to connect remotely to this computer". Click on "select remote users" and type in the user name (Answer to Q2) you want to be able to remote to. add that name to the list.

On the LAPTOP computer go to the start menu and select all programs > accessories> communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

Enter the Desktops Computer Name (answer to Q1). Enter the user name (Q2) you allowed earlier and enter the password for that user. For the domain, enter the name of the workgroup (Q3). Press Connect.

I honestly do not know how else to break it down... If need be, I will capture some screen shots..

thank you for all that information and your time helping me. however...i still cannot connect for some reason even tho i followed ur instructions...i think it is because that my desktop is using xp home edition while my laptop is using xp pro. on my desktop i dont have a choice where i can select the remote users but on my laptop i can...so i dont kno if that is the problem...whenever i tried to connect however...it says that there was a connection error, either the remote desktop isnt enabled or that my computer was to busy to accept the invitation...which neither is true...so i dont kno...if you have any more advices to give me i would greatly appreciate it. i just want to thank you again for helping me out

ok...well...i since i'm a newbie and i'm really curious...lol...i tried the connection the other way around with my laptop being the host...and i did everything...according to ur instructions...but it still doesnt work...it says that the same thing so just wondering if you kno how to fix it

hey thanx trizoy for introducing me to logmein its pretty easy to set up and everything...but i'm wondering...if you can have remote access to the host computer without having the host computer see wats going on if thats possible plz tell me how i can do that

wait, are you asking if you can do remote desktop without the person on the other computer know that they are being monitered?

i have tried log me in...and even tho it is free right now with pro...will i be able to transfer files in the free version? if not...then i probably wont be using it
