Help with divx playing...

I bought a divx dvd player for my tv. I have put many files on it, i used winavi to make normal avi files to divx. However I made one disc and put a video on it. It played fine. I left the dvd open so i could add to later. then i added to it and now the player says unknown disc. it still plays the other divx videos previously burned. (they r mostly xvid but still plays fine so thats not the problem). is there a solution to this? i dont want to waste another disc burning again if there is another problem.

thanks in advance.

A Divx DVD player should play the raw .AVI's also. There is no need to convert when using a Divx DVD player. The only reason to convert would be to play on all DVD players.

thanx for the reply. ok i didnt know they could read raw avi's. divx (and xvid) are smaller aren't they? it doesnt take long to convert so if the size difference is big maybe ill keep using xvid. i wouldn't have thought it being xvid would not let it play it as it has worked before and it is a divx player.

also do u think it could have been a bad burn eventhough roxio told me it completed successfully? since all i did was rename something therefore burning 600kb. i dont know how else it was fixed.

thanks for ur reply

It all depends on what size the original .AVI file was. Usually when converting from .AVI to Divx or such it will be a larger file. I have used similar programs to transcode .AVI to Divx and have gotten poor results. It's up to finding a great program or just watching the raw .AVI. I'm sure there is a great tool for your needs, however, I am not sure of one atm. Good luck!

i use winavi to convert. do u know why this happened to me? (the dvd not working then working when i renamed it)? could it have been a bad burn? and should i be able to burn one and leave the dvd open and then add to it?

thanks

AVI is a container format (like MKV), not a video format. A DivX file can be inside and AVI and thus play in a DivX player. You just have to make sure that the AVIs you are using contain a Divx video. As long as it contains a Divx video, your Divx Player should work so no need for conversion and the resulting loss in quality.

ok so basically if i right click on it and go summary if it says divx (or xvid) i can play it? doesnt that mean it is allready converted and if not i need to convert it? also about the problem, could it have been a one off or a bad burn first time round?

thanks

DVDs are pretty sensitive to burning, if you use cheap media or a generic dvd burner, you can botch the process. I am not %100 on how Divx DVD players work, I assume you just burn a Divx AVI file to disc and it reads it but I'm not sure if it has to have a certain setting (codecs have various settings that determine compatibility with other devices, Divx is loaded with them). As for media, I recommend going with Sony brand DVD-Rs, they are of high quality and I've never had a "coaster" with them.

thanks for that. I use either Memorex or Verbatim. Verbatim are really good quality. I think just as good as Sony. I read this article (http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm) that lists dvd brands and their die which determins how good they are. my memorex are 2nd class and verbatim are 1st class. I dont think thats the problem. the site gives a table u need dvd identifier or some other ones (cant remember what i used). then get the dvd media ID and it says how good they are. sony, verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, TDK (blue packet) are top quality while my old lg's along with others are worst.

a while back i used to use some cheap 4th class "rubbish" lg discs. apparently i should have got 50% burns and 50% costers. out of the pack of 50 i got successful burns from all of them. i am using a samsung 22x dvd burner. not the best but good enough. out of all the dvd's i have burnt i have never had a coaster (this one would be the first 'bad burn' if that was what it was but it was fixed so no coaster)

as with the divx, i believe that the codecs are loaded on a chip in the dvd player. it also has a cpu controlling it.

thanks for the info and help
