Help with a Power Issue!

We have just returned from 2 weeks holiday and cannot get our PC to start up. It is an Emachines 610 and the power was off the whole time we were away. Now we have tried to boot it up and ... nothing! There must be power getting to it somewhere/somehow because the light indicator for the ethernet cable lights up and stays on. I have tried a different power cable to no avail, there is just nothing happening when I press the on button, no lights or sounds. Any ideas? Thanks

Are all the connections to the motherboard secure? Did you leave it plugged in while you were away?

Hi Yasu,

yes all the connections seem fine, it was plugged in while we were away but the power switch at the wall was turned off.

Sounds like something is dead but I don't know what. It's getting power obviously. Just to clarify, nothing turns on when you push the power button? Not even the fans? If you have a spare PSU you could try using that one in your computer and see if that works. I can't think of any other problems right now.

Yeah thats right, nothing turns on when I push the power button, not even the fan! I have a psu in an old Packard Bell that I will maybe try later. Thanks, will post an update later.

A friend of mine had this happen to his eMachines. Swapping out the PSU didn't help; the motherboard had died, and took out the keyboard and mouse with it. Pretty rotten for a 2-year old machine.

you know sumit, that is exactly what has happened to my computer. Im glad in a way that its not just me. sounds evil but its been doing my head in. Mine gets used often and soon as i turned it on it turned off and nothing was working. The first time it did it just the fan and lights came on. That was the power supply and motherboard. The second time it did it just the lights came on like you said but my power button light came on as well. I was told that you can get powersurges even if the socket on the wall is turned off because it earths into the computer. (thats what i was told in a shop). You should be able to get a new motherboard for it pretty cheap. Mine was a year old when it first went.

Hi guys, well I have finally had the chance today to take a good look at the PC. When taking out the PSU I notice that one of the cables was frayed and stuck to the circuit board! See pic:

I tried a new PSU in the machine, but that did not work. Do you guys think the PC is completely dead then? Was it a power surge or something that caused that to happen to the wires, I've never seen anything like it! Anyway thanks for your help everyone. Look forward to reading your comments on this. Gill

I don't think that a power surge would cause a wire to fray like that. I don't think your entire computer is dead either, it's probably just the mobo that died(same thing happened to my aunt). E-Machines isn't known for its high-quality parts...

The older models with the Trigem mobos suck royally. Newer ones like mine use FIC brand mobos... with MUCH better reliability.
