Hey there John,
what you need to do is access your router via its IP adress. You can see what this is going to start, run, cmd, ipconfig. Your routers address is listed as the default gateway. Type this number into your browser, and your router settings should come up. Somewhere in there you should see some type of security settings for wireless, this is where you will need to enter a password.

After doing that, you will need to enter this password on your laptop as well under its wireless setiing, most likely as an encryption key.

was she able to go to the internet or just see your network?

depending on your router, you have to connect to the routers embedded web browser. just like lynx6200 said it is something like 192.168.xxx.xxx
best to get out the manual for the router, you probably can use the default password, if not you are going to have to reset the router to get in, which may also affect your network connection. Once inside you want to change the name of the SSID from the default, enable wep or pka encryption or whatever your cards can , the highest level. change the router password, right it down and tape to the bottom of the router. your sister now will see your network but will no longer be able to connect. if you do not want her or anybody to see your wireless network turn off broadcast of ssid, not to be confussed with turning off the wireless, also real secure turn off dhcp and use static ip addresses...do not do all these at onece since you are new, do one at a time and verify your network still works then do another.
