Help - Wired Net Sharing with router

Not very computer literate here - know just the basics so sorry if this is a stupid inquiry.

Just hooked up a D-Link router to my computer and second computer - wired. Did NOT create a network, just wanted to share an internet connection - cable.
All I did was hook everything up and it all works great - surfing net on both systems. I did NOT do anything else, ie no configuration, no software install, no firewall adjustments for the router etc. No nothing aside from hooking up the hardware and cat5 wire. Is this good enough? Do I actually need to do anything else? I checked my McAfee firewall log and NO ip address is listed for attempted access since I hooked up the router - does this mean the router firewall is intercepting them before they even have a chance to get to the software firewall? Also, my computer keeps getting pinged by my other computer which now shares the exact same ip address as this one. Finally, will Comcast still just be charging me for the one ip address even though its being shared by two systems AND has changed from the one I had before I hooked up the router? Any answers/advise would be appreciated. I just didnt think it could be this easy and I certainly dont want to mess with any configurations if its already working via plug and play. D-Link524 - Ive read many reviews from people who messed with the configurations and could never get it to work so basically my stance - because its working already - "it aint broke so I aint fixin it" - but I dont want to leave anything important out especially security - anyway, if I missed something, someone please let me know. Thanks. Dude

Actually, it IS a wireless router, just not using it wirelessly - how do I disable that option so no one next door is using it wirelessly? Also, does a router ever turn off? I see no power on/off button on this thing - will it be on for as long as it lasts? Can I still put my modem in standby for the night when not in use?

Thanks, Dude

Which model is it?
No you Mcafee will not see other people connecting to your network if it is enabled. And yes you need to login and create a router id/password for security reasons.

If wireless is turned off, all this is ok.

I never turned wireless on OR off. One other thing that I recall - my nic card is enabled at 100 mbps and the router is 10 mbps - can I do any tweaking to get even more speed? This is a D-Link DI-524 Wireless G WiFi certified upto 54mpbs with a built in four port switch. NOT using wirelessly.
