My system locked up two days ago and I reinstalled XP by completely reformatting. Now, I have no sound. In control panel, it lists no sound device. I know, I know...reinstall drivers, right? Well, not so fast Budreau. I went to the Emachines site and downloaded the driver, opened it, nothing. I believe I've installed all windows updates and restarted too. I can't find any specs on what type of Sound Card I have. Can anyone help??? What's the answer to the universe??? Will Lindsay Lohan snap out of it??? Who is Lindsay Lohan anyway??? What's this little fungus on my arm???:D Ok, enough.

So, can somebody please advise on:

1) how do i find out what sound card I have? I've looked everywhere!
2) Where can i find the correct driver?

I even ran belarc and it didn't list my soundcard. I know it's there. I know it can work. It just needs its little helper driver.

I have an Emachines m622 uk8x. Really not been a bad little computer, considering...

thanks...

okay, maybe i have it

I found and downloaded a nice freeware program called unknown device identifier, which performed beautifully. It found the 7 drivers I'm missing and gave me the name of the program and the manufacturer. I'm guessing it's as easy as downloading these programs, restarting, and voila...hopefully this will work.

Just in case, any suggestions you have will be appreciated. I'll let you know tomorrow if this worked.:P

Thanks and have a great day

Good luck :D

If you have a Realtek and it doesn't work after driver installation try to do it in this order:
motherboard drivers, MSUAA and last the audio driver.

I've heard that sometimes it matters..

The best way to find your sound drivers, assuming that you have a name brand computer as opposed to a custom built one, is to simply go to the manufacture's website (dell.com, hp.com, etc) and look up your model number and download the drivers there. Go to the support section of the website, and then look for something that says "drivers" or "downloads" and it should have an area to type in or look up your model number.

all is well not...sorta

okay. appreciate the great advice. boy, you guys are good at this. well, i did in fact end up at the manufacturer's website and the drivers were there. everything's workin now.

only one problem remaining. my fonts. i lost alot of fonts somehow during the reinstall. i know you can download fonts free but why can't i just get back the ones i had? i have some projects in progress that aren't working now due to missing fonts.

why didn't xp just install the typical fonts i had before???

is there an xp update that includes the fonts i lost?
