Help! System Restore is not working !

Hey everyone I'm new here and not really adapted to computer terminology

Before I post about my problem, I'm going to post my computer OS

Windows XP SP3

I've had his computer for 3 years.

Problem: Recently today, I have gotten a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).
I restarted and it did not work. I pressed F8 and selected " Last Known Good Configuration ". It worked. However it messed up my resolution, my wallpaper is now gray, and my Windows explorer is replaced with a gray toolbar.
Considering the state in which my computer is in right now, I wanted to do a system restore. However, when I click on it, it says "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and run system restore again." This yields no effect as it says the same thing again. I tried doing this in safe mode with networking. Same error. I went on Google and searched around for my problem. None of the suggested workarounds worked.
I decided to go searching in the regedit. The weird thing is,when I look in " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion "
I noticed system restore is not there, neither is sr. Help?
I do not have my Windows Install disk.
