Help Setting Up Connection

I need help setting up a shared internet connection. Our internet is connected to our family computer, and I'd like to be able to access it on a computer in another room as well. On the family computer, the internet is connected through a NIC. I've made two straight through Cat5 cables, one from the onboard RJ-45 jack on the family computer to a D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch, and the other from the switch to my other computer. On the other computer, as soon as I set this up, it detected it, and it shows a Local Area Connection at 100.0 Mbps. I disabled the firewall on that connection, and I ran the network setup wizard, choose the option that said the computer would share an internet connection, the setup finished, and I restarted. On the family computer, it showed the Local Area Connection, but it said that there was a problem with it, and there would be little to no access. I ran the network setup wizard, selecting it to be directly connected to the internet, but when the setup should have finished, it said there was an error setting up the network, and that is where I am now. I have never done any networking, and everything I've done up to this point was just guess work, so if someone could explain to me the correct way to do it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Specifically, it says "Limited or No Connectivity" on the family computer. I tried redoing the RJ-45 on the cable, but it still has that problem. Would it make a difference if I used just one crossover cable and ignore the switch completely? It would be a pain to run another cable, but if someone can convince me it'd work, I'd do it.

How are you dialing up to the web, is it a usb modem on your parents machine of a ethernet modem, or a router with a modem built it

I fit was a router/modem, I suspect it would be much easier, but it is an external modem that has a coax input and a Cat5 output.

Ok, now I have a cable going from my modem to my switch, and cables from my switch to both of my computers. My family computer still retains it's connection, but I have no idea how to set up the connection on the other computer. I just got off the phone with my ISP's tech support, and he tried to tell me that I had to have a router, but that didn't seem right, as I am pretty sure I have seen it done with a switch. Any help would be great.

Problem fixed! After about 2-3 hours on the phone with my ISP's tech support, I finally fixed it myself. Turns out that there is something wrong with my on board NIC, the only thing that I had to do was install a new NIC, and new everything works.
