Help needed

Hey everybody!

I didn't know in witch topic I should write this... I'm a total novice in computers, and I have a 'thing' with my laptop that needs... It goes like this:

My LAN gone astray... When I am at my university, using the net cable in the dorm, everything goes well. When I try to connect to the internet at home I have a peculiar problem. My computer won't acknowledge that my network cable is plugged in. The lights aren't flashing at the 'plug in site', and I get the "Network cable unplugged" message all the time --- but this all goes away if I use my dorm-net. I reinstalled the Windows today, reinstalled the driver for the network card, but... nothing happens. What should I do?

Have you tried replacing the ethernet cable? Is the other end of the cable plugged into a modem or router? If router, try a different port.

The ethernet cable works fine with the desktop computer. I really don't know about the other end... it's plugged to a box in the hallway, that connects all the computers in the building. Any ideeas what should I do?

So the same Ethernet cable that isn't working for your laptop works for you desktop? If that's the case I would try a new cable. Depending on how old your network setup is computer how new your laptop is, maybe that cable is too old.

Thanks! I'll try changing my cable. I found out this morning that the head of the cable was changed a few weeks ago... Anyway, thanks for the help!
