HELP! Messed up audio

something is wrong with my left speaker. there is this muffeled, lurching noise coming from it. but when i put it up to my hear i can faintly hear the music playing. the left speaker is attached to the left speaker line out of the right spreaker. what could be causing this? any ideas?
 
Slightly damaged wires? Have you tried moving the connector left and right a bit?

That doesn't seem to be a software problem.
 
i was just thinking that some unamplified sound always comes out of my speakers if they are not turned on. so therefore the little sound i can hear from the left one is whatever unamplified sound makes it through. so my problem is the left speaker is not being amplified. but i dont know why i hear so much other noise.
 
alright, this keeps getting stranger and stanger, i found out that only the right one works while using windows media player but they both work fine for any other audio program (itunes, Guitar pro (midi), any computer sounds (beeps or whatever)) so what can i change in media player to fix this?
