Help, it says it's connected but the internet doens't work

Hi

There is a network in my house with 2 desktops and a laptop. The router is WRT54G. The two desktops use Linksys WUSB54Gs and work fine, they get internet and use the Linksys Wireless Network Monitor.

The laptop uses an orinoco card that plugs into some sort of slot. It's connected to the network okay, it says the signal strength is Excellent and the status is connected. But the internet doesn't work, it says Firefox cannot find the server at google.com. The network uses a WEP key. The laptop and one desktop have a static IP. The laptop doesn't get internet, what should I do?

If you are using static IP's, do you have the router DHCP turned off? Do you have a manually configured network?
You may have to manually assign DNS servers to the laptops network properties

I'm not sure about a manually configured network, the routers DHCP is not turned off, and I have assigned a DNS server to the laptops network properties.

Linksys routers support a feature that is called "static DHCP" which will assign a static IP address every time to the same client. You set it up via router control panel.

can you ping your router from the client that is not connected?

make sure you have all the windows updates ran, assuming you are running windows. There are many security fixes that went into wireless networking since the release of SP2, including improved wep and wpa support.

Can you connect to a non secure wifi network? Try tossing a stumbler on there and see if you can pick up a non secure wifi network and see if you can connect. This will rule out the possibility that the client machine is failing.

what exact router are you using of the WRT54G and are you running any third party firmware?

Hi,

No it used to say limited or no connectivity, once I set up a static IP it dissapeared.

The laptop cannot ping the router, even though it says Connected in the Windows Wireless thing.

I tried connecting to an unsecured network and the internet still did not work.

hmm you can't connect to an unsecure network then perhaps you have an OS/Driver/bad wifi nic issue at hand. I would try with drivers first, update them to the newest, apply all windows updates and if still no dice, overlay the OS. You can also boot into the recovery command console and do a chkdsk /r

chech all of your settings and make sure you never did anything silly like put in the wrong subnet mask, or set up access control on the router but never let your lappy in on ther
