hey all, so currently i have some philips speakers, 60 watts if memory serves, 2.1 system, with srs audio sandbox virtual sound card (man its amazing software for making poor speakers sound nice haha)

now i dont have a massive budget for upgrading, but why im looking for, is clarity, and volume,

now im open to any ideas, no matter how crazy,

i also like to jam along to some metallica on my guitar and well lets say my amps pretty much on its lowest setting or i cant hear the song atm,

any recommendations?

thanks ;)

Philips speakers lol, any company that makes washing machines, toasters and kettles etc can not be considered as serious audio cats.

Why don't you run a line out to a dedicated amp of good quality with some Bose speakers attached?

Bose might be out of your price range though if you're looking to go budget.

The speakers I linked above are much, MUCH better than any Bose speakers out there (and probably cheaper too).

What amp would you choose Didyouknow?

No need, both the Audioengine 5 and the PSW10 are active speakers.

I mean he could go with bookshelf speakers with a receiver along with an active subwoofer if he wants, but that'll just make things more complicated.

The sub woofer is ok but nowhere does it give the amp rating for the Audioengine speakers.

This is all we get;

Product Features

  • iPod power charging port (Combo Port)
  • 2 audio inputs
  • Built-in power amplifier, no receiver/amp needed
  • Power outlet for Airport Express
  • Front panel volume control

The Audioengine 5 is 45 watts total. Though wattage rating doesn't really mean too much in terms of loudness. I have the M-Audio AV40 (40 watts) and they go plenty loud paired with my PSW 10.

I used to run a Kenwood (formerly known as Trio) 200 watt amp into a pair of Wharfdale 400 watt speakers.

The foundations in the house would shake.

My long term plans were to get a THX chipped amp but I could not afford.

hey, sorry, i did intend to put a price range in there haha, but got a little sidetracked, erm

budget is about ~$200, i would Stretch to $250 (£150)

those audio engines look nice, little pricey tho haha (but you pay for quality ehh)

any ideas for that budget, ive been told about these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acoustic-En...=UTF8&coliid=IUBTZEO14RLV9&colid=G4Y122804MRO

apparently they are good, but my good and somebody else's good when it comes to audio are often worlds apart

hey all thanks for the reply,

im currently looking at all the suggestions up till now,

ill go little more in depth as to my situation, as audio is important to me,

ill say again my top end budget is £150, its all, as a student i could currently justify investing in speakers, but unfortunately, the sad fact is i would probally be placed in the fledgling audiophile category, by that i mean, im the sort of person that goes to see transformers 3, in all its 7.1 glory, and it unimpressed, thinking the cinema's audio sounded weak haha.

i have a lecturer who is right into his sound system, and he before we broke up for the summer, told me that i could buy any 2.1 or 5.1 or even 7.1 system and it still wouldn't come close to the quality i would get from a set of bookshelf speakers,

now as i say, £150 is the current budget, but within reason, if i can get something that is going to do the business, and last, i would rather save towards it,

i plan on a trip to local stores in the near future and will try to demo, some systems in my budget.

should also note, i am probably going to run whatever i get from my pc, i know this isnt the route to the best sound possible, but its my base i have to work with.

so any help would be amazing, willing to buy from anywhere, ebay included.

thanks again ;)

Listen to me John ok.

You can see my age to the left in my profile and I've been running red hot HiFi systems for years.

Any Active speakers that you plug into a sound card and the mains will not hold a candle to a dedicated amp and speakers.

If you want true HiFi then the latter option is the only way to go mate.

Try these people if you have a store near you as I've bought some wicked stuff off them over the years.

thanks for the quick reply, my closest store is Edinburgh, so i could probably get to there by catching the train,

so if you had to recommend a complete setup, on a budget, say 2 speakers, a sub and a amp, (or even minus the sub to begin with) what would you say? as i say, i can save towards, a system to an extent, not sure of how far that extent is, £150 being the current limit, i would say, perhaps, £3-400 by christmas, and i would like whatever i get to last.

fingers crossed after i get qualified i can stump up £2-3000 on a decent system haha

With good speakers and depending how much bass you want doesn't always mean that you have to buy a sub woofer.

When looking at HiFi one shouldn't consider something that you can buy from Tesco's.

I know at the moment the budget is low but consider this Receiver from Teac.

http://www.richersounds.com/product/amplifiers-receivers/teac/ag790/teac-ag7090

It bangs out 100 watts RMS and is good for low end.

These are excellent speakers that will last you for a good long time.
