Help choosing a sound card

The only reason i wanted a sound card was to free up some system resources. I know it doesn't make a huge difference but when your system is close to max and don't have alot of money I figure it would help some. Any suggestions on a cheap sound card?

Sound card can't really free up resource. And cheap sound card is rubbish. How much have you got? I recommend you upgrade CPU/ RAM instead

Well hardware D3D acceleration does not work in Vista/7, so getting a sound card isn't exactly going to help you there. Maybe you should consider upgrading your computer instead.

It really doesn't? I've always heard since I first started building computers that it did...hmmm Oooo I'm gonna disable the audio in game tonight and see if I notice any difference, if I do notice a difference wouldn't it be the same difference as having a sound card powering the sound?

I don't have the money right now but if I did get some money it probably wouldn't be more than $30, which is about what I bought my stick of ram for but now the price has doubled. Oh and every price quote I say is really doubled as i will have to buy my wife one also so I'm not running the game better than her and having to listen to those comments daily..lol

I would see you boosting performance by upgrading CPU. Probably Athlon II x3 435 OEM @ $64??

At the moment, have you try overclocking your CPU?

Yeah but I don't have an aftermarket CPU cooler so I can only go an axtra 100 without getting too hot for my liking. I have found one for about $30 that I've thought about getting but haven't actually had the extra money yet. Would my processor overclock to 3 if i can keep the temp down?

The problem I face is Vanguard only supports 2 cores right now, and not very effectively i might add. The first core runs about 85-100% while playing and the 2nd core about 20-35%. So I would really need to get...not sure the model number but the dual core 3.2g one but then thats not future proof cause I bet the next game I play will support more cores then I'll have to upgrade again..lol

i recommend a audigy 2 sound card you can get them on ebay for under $15.00.
a big improvement in sound quality compared to your built-in sound on your motherboard.

Why the heck has the post gone from a question to buying a sound card to a recommendation of a cpu/mobo upgrade? :D

Anyhow,Id recommend getting a Asus xonar....You will definatly tell the difrence in sound quality from that over an on-board chipset.

$39.99 after mail in rebate,i know you said $30 but i wouldnt recommend getting any other sound cards from anyone other than Asus or Creative on that budget.

But it wont realy free up system resources if thats what your wanting more than anything.
