Headphones background noise

Hi there I'm just wondering, I have a pair of beats studio overear headphones and whenever I turn them on it starts to make this weird 'shhhhh' kind of noise and even when playing music it is faintly present in the background they don't even have to be plugged into anything to start to make the sound, just need to be turned on. Is this normal? Thanks

For beats? Yes. Crappy headphones, no offense, they were probably a gift.

A better soundcard would help due to the lower THD+N values (total harmonic distortion and noise, which is what you are hearing)

turns out its just caused because it has electronically powered noise cancelation, therefore when sitting in total silence you can pick out the almost silent sound. and they are surprisingly good headphones.
