headphone socket problem

Hi to all,

the sound on my built-in laptop speakers does not cut out when I plug in headphones in the headphone socket. This is because someone has broke the headphone socket on my laptop.

I do however still get sound through my headphones still so Im wondering is there any other way of cutting the sound out manually on my laptop speakers while getting sound through my headphones????

I have already been to a variety of technicians to get the socket fixed but i've been quoted silly prices so Im seeking a possible cost effective solution

I have a hp dv8387ea laptop if thats any help.

Also I have posted this thread before with 40 views but no reply... is this issue a hopeless 1

Short of buying an external usb soundcard, I can't think of a fix. Obviously the computer is able to turn off the speakers, but this may be a feature that is physically part of the sound card rather than something you can alter in windows, I dunno.

If it's really annoying you then open it up and have a look - soldering on a new socket may be possible...

thank you very much for your time in reading and at least replying. I have considered opening up and operating on my laptop but am a little worried that I'll do more damage than good as I dont know my way around inside it however I am generally good at fixing things. Do laptops possibly have things like "Haynes" manuals like cars have??

Laptops are so unique and it's so rare people even try to go inside the, I seriously doubt you'll find any such manual. Most headphone jacks have a little switch to detect when to cut off external speakers. It's rather common for this to break. Search the forums and you'll find other such problems.

I've gone inside various laptops and they really can be a pain. My suggestion would be to deal with it if possible unless you don't mind losing the laptop. I've successfully disassembled and reassembled 3 laptops, but never risked doing so with a newer machine...
