Headphone jacks on computer or on speaker?

If you have speakers without a headphone jack, can you still plug your headphones into the headphone jack on the PC and hear the music, or is the PC jack only for the onboard sound?

uumm..... pls explain more.

Heh heh. Sorry! What I mean is, if you have a pair of speakers that do not have their own headphone jack, but you want to listen to some music through your headphones, can you still plug in the headphones into the jack on the front of the computer case? Will this let you listen to the speakers, or do the speakers need to have their own dedicated jack?

Hope that was better! :)

Yes, when you plug your headphones into the jack on the front of the computer, assuming it is hooked up correctly, your speakers should automatically cut off and the music will play through your headphones.

Ok, thanks! I know that probably sounds like a retarded question, but for some reason I started wondering about how that might work, assuming you have a sound card and speakers and all that stuff. ;)
