HD assigned the drive letter I?

New Member
made 1 computer from 2 that i had laying around. everything works fine but for some reason when i installed XP on the new hard drive it assigned the drive letter I to it. it has a floppy and 2 cd rom drives. any idea why this would be? the computer works fine it's just weird to see that....thanks
 
Not really going to speculate why it did that, but you can change it if it bothers you by going to the disk management

You can't change the system drive letter. You can change any other drive letter but the drive/partition that windows is installed on.

any idea as to why that happened? this was a clean install and i can re-format and re-install if i can get it to be "normal" with c: as the drive letter.

Yeah, but did you read the first paragraph?

For the most part, this is not recommended, especially if the drive letter is the same as when Windows was installed. The only time that you may want to do this is when the drive letters get changed without any user intervention. This may happen when you break a mirror volume or there is a drive configuration change. This should be a rare occurrence and you should change the drive letters back to match the initial installation.

If he somehow changes the drive letter now, he will screw up the system and his programs won't run. It's not recommended to change the drive letter.
 
Yeah i did, but still worth a read if you really want to do it. John i have a question. As i am new to this can you please tell me how i can see if some one re posts something, for instance this thread.... it didnt come up in my mail or as a notification, i just randomly checked and there you were replying ... ? hope it made sense thanks.
 
Go to your User CP, (top left) and go to options and in there you can specify email notificaiton.
