ok as one of the problems im having with my new rig, i cannot get the sound working. i have the drivers from msi's website, but when i click on the app, it seems to load for a second (pointer turns to loading circle) then nothing...

at one time (seemingly a random occurence) the little speaker on the bottom right of my screen was working, and registered as a high-definition sound device. i listened to a song or two, it sounded great! lol. but a restart later, (BSOD to be specific) it was replaced by a speaker with a little red x...

anyone help? i could at least play stalker untill i get the rest of these problems fixed up.

First go into the device manager and look in the sound, video, and game controllers section there for any Creative items. Offten the WDM driver seems to be the item that fails to go on properly.

Right click on any yellow marked items and hopefully the update unpacked files by creating an install folder you can browse to. You can also choose the update driver option to see if Windows will refresh the drivers or find the correct ones on it's own.

sorry i had to post this, what am i looking for exactly?

Not showing any sound in device manager. It should show like a Sound, video and game controller even if the drivers arent loaded with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Are you sure you have the onboard enabled in the bios. What board is this?

If the onboard chip is not toast there yiou may end up performing at least a repair install of Windows since that entire section is missing. That should be right there between the processors and storage controllers sections.

If Windows was just on there I would have to suspect a bad install was seen where some things didn't go on like they should. Even with the onboard disabled or bad chip the section should still be seen. You would simply have a yellow marked item or none shown when opening that up.

The thing is.... you won't even get the sound icon in your taskbar unless the system has a soundcard already installed. Not unless Vista is different than XP in that aspect??? I expect that the device manager could be corrupt for the sound section.

The clock, volume control(Windows), and network items can still be checked off to be visible in Vista as well as in XP in the system tray section.

For performing a repair install of Vista so far only one guide for that is found on a Vista forum. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

The usual advice however would be a full reinstall of Windows to correct any errors seen with the original installation like the lack of that section in the device manager shown there. After checking the settings in the bios which should see the onboard enabled there a repair or even better clean install of Windows would then show if the audio chip on the board was good or bad once everything was there to work with.

oh sorry for not saying what the board is, it is the MSI P6N 680i Diamond, featuring the awesome incomprehensible X-fi onboard sound system, that DOESNT WORK.

lol

I think I've read some threads online saying that there's driver compatibility issues and that X-fi isn't really doing much about it. However I don't remember when the thread was from, so it could be a completely different error.

PC-Eye your my best friend! the repair worked and it sounds great!!!

Really this makes me so D*** happy i might just keep this board!

hold up... i restarted my computer after listening to a refreshing song and that stupid speaker and the red X is back... damn and i really thought it was fixed this time

With the repair or full install tried you now know the onboard works and it's simply a matter of getting the drivers to install correctly. The 5 server download page for that model for the XP/Vista audio driver set is seen at http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=6340&i=0

Try a fresh download from there rather then the probably XP only drivers found on the software disk. That will see the drivers for both versions. You were probably trying to get XP drivers to work and that's likely the problem being seen.

At least you know the repair method there works if you now see the sound, video, and game controllers section seen in the device manager anyways.

PC-eye your the greatest!

i've got sound now, wow my old sound really sucked because this sounds brilliant!

thanks so much for the help!
