What's the best (yet affordable...under $300?) scanner for 35mm slides? I want to get all the old family slides onto cd's, but I don't really know where to start. I want to do it myself rather than hand over something so precious to a business to do it for me. Any advice on scanners would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are a few lower end scanners that should do the trick fine... The HP 4070 is about $130 US and has a whole picture scanning apparatus built into the machine. There are also a few other good ones floating around, but I've had a lot of luck with the performance of that particular scanner, a lot of satisfied customers. 
And a lot of them were looking at scanners that were over twice the price...
