Good Philosophy?

So my cousin and I are like the only two people in our family that are crazy into computers, though he is much older and has a masters in Computer Science. We were working on some programming on Debian(a Unix OS) awhile back and he said something to me about why he uses Microsoft, Windows, and commonly used programs a lot, even when they sometimes seem to have the most problems because so many people have figured out how to exploit them and get through the cracks. I thought that it really made a lot of sense and that it would be a good topic for discussion on here. Here is what he said:

"Even though there can be more problems with Microsoft and Windows, you can always get it fixed because someone somewhere has most likely come across the same problem and fixed it."

I don't know what you guys think, but I am quite curious to see where this thread leads.

microsoft is not as bad as they use to be with security in Windows XP and bloated in Vista. I think many users stop using them because of those two operating systems and for the fact for many of us I just feel like the U/I has been recycled to many times just to get a few up lifts here and there.

I think as far as being able to find a anwser to the problems is good for all OS. Look at Linux, thanks to the internet with its un limited google finds and Forums Linux Tech support is really free and there is a lot out there. When I first started using Ubuntu 3 years ago the only reason I am able to do what I can with it today is because of the internet and the massive online sources and community.

Its hard to explain all. Im not a programmer either.
A few notes. You will always have hackers. Its the glory and thats what they do.
Microsoft has gone a long way with support. Hundreds of updates as long as the
the operating system is still in production and supported always. Hackers always went after the majority of what they use. Its a concern and your choice. I don't know one person that
has a Mac. Only here. Not family and friends. I like it but not standard.

Why do they use it you ask.
Because most people use it including industry or business. Its common and standard.
They have hundreds working on routines with programming and improving.
Lots of these programs are available but anyway ya look at it the standard operating system is microsoft. If everybody used something different i would use it also.
Its not Mac. thats not the standard.
just my thought.

He also uses many Unix operating systems to do programming, and I like Linux, as does one of my best friends who is a good computer programmer. But for ease of use and normalcy, I prefer Windows, because it is "user-friendly". I also don't quite know my way around a Unix system too well yet. As my Debian that I have is only the user interface. All I get to be able to get around is a keyboard and programming commands.

Yeah I know there will always be those expert hackers that it doesn't matter, they can still screw things up. I'm not going to lie, one of my friends like to do competition hacking, which is kind of legal, because the people that host the competitions design websites for the competitors to hack. It's a very interesting concept. But then it can lead to the illegal hacking, since the competitions improve their hacking skills, but anyways.

And I have to agree, Microsoft is much much better than it was a few years ago. Even though I was still a young kid, I still understood that they needed to do some revising of their system.

Remember Debian is Linux which is "Unix Like" but it is still not Unix. Very similiar code but different at the same time.

Plus with OS like Ubuntu and Linux mint the old saying that "Linux is for Programmers" is long gone. those two OS can be used for advance program work but at the same time with the U/I, apps that are pre installed, and the app stores they have are there for end users as well. I have installed Ubuntu on many of my friends computers that all are end users and to this day they have figured out how to work with everything on there own due to how easy it is.

Well yeah I know, but they are basically the same. And considering all I can do with mine is program, since my cousin set it up that way, I haven't really gotten around to try learning the Linux or Unix systems.
