Good 'Ol Dell Axim

So I have this Dell Axim X30 pocket PC. The thing's about 6 years old, but since I got it on ebay for $61.50, I figure it's still a better deal than an ipod touch. It only has Windows Mobile 2003 SE, so it doesn't have very good program support. But, whenever I bring it anywhere, people crowd around and say "Wow, what's that thing?" I say "It's sort-of and older version of the ipod touch. I got it cheap on ebay." Then they say "That thing's so cool. It's made by Dell???!! Awesome!!!!" And I just keep it at that. :D Have you every fooled the public with rare but old technology?

I have an older X30 600some mhz myself...been trying to find an X50v though for a decent price, as it can run newer versions of winmo, has more memory/ram, and a nicer display and dedicated gpu to it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've got the 624Mhz version too. I wish I could install winmobile 5 on it though. It boosts your program support from about 20% to 90%. But, on the upside, I ran a benchmark on it (vsbenchmark graphics benchmark) and surprisingly I think it got a better score than the x51v for some reason. Do you think that windows mobile 5 uses that much more ram?

P.S. Do you have people ooh and ahh at yours too?

Not really, i use it mainly as a universal remote these days. Ive been thinking about selling it and then picking myself up an X51v so i can throw winmo 6 on it.

Yeah, I tried the remote software that came on the disc once. If only it friggin supported DirecTV receivers!!! I should try to find some freeware download of something that supports it sometime. It's too bad Dell doesn't make the Axim anymore. It's a mistake to cancel the line in my opinion, seeing how popular they are. I've met a lot of people online that own one.

What convinced me to buy one was its processor speed: 624MHz in a thing the size of a floppy disk! Back when I got it a couple years ago I was still using my old Pentium iii Dell desktop that had an 800MHz CPU, so you could guess how much it intrigued me to have a handheld with a processor only 176MHz slower than my desktop CPU. :D

Well, its totally different architecture. Axim uses an Xscale processor, while desktop pc's use an x86 architecture. The architectures of each are not directly comparable in mhz.

Yeah, I know how that works (eg. Pentium M 1.6GHz is about the same as a 2.8GHz Pentium 4), but I didn't know that it wasn't x86. It still just amazed me anyway though :). It's probably about as powerful as a 500MHz Pentium iii, or worse.
