Berfore I do, what protection software do I need. I have a desktop to download the needed software to a thumbdrive. Please give details in simple terms. Thank you. Frank

You probably want some anti virus and anti malware.

I'd say:

AVG Free Edition
MalwareBytes

as well as some other free firewall (not too good with those myself :s)

now what?

Okay installed avg and I think it automatically starts when I boot up because I see it in the tray in the lower right hand corner of screen. i also notice it updates the definitions daily but do I have to do anything? How often do I have to do it.

In regard to Malwarebytes, I have a shortcut on my desktop so I don't think it is running in the background. What do I do with this. Thank you.

Frank

PS. Also, don't I have to have a firewall. I read where people on the forum say to use zone alarm, so if I download that I have the same question does it just run in the background or do I have to do something with it.

Avg is always running in the background on your system. You should only have to perform a full scan about once every week or so just to keep on top of infections.

Malwarebytes is only an on demand scanner and does not run unless you run it yourself. It also does not automatically update, you would need to update it manually. You would also want to do a quick scan every few days as well.

You already have windows firewall, which is fine for most users. If you want more security then Zonealarm would be an option but its very intrusive and you'll get popups from it all the time asking you to allow access to certain programs and such.

It has been a year or two since I used AVG, I am on Avast! now, as are all other users in my house. It scans everything that comes through anywaay, and aborts connections with any potential virus sources. That is all the protection I have on my system and I haven't ever had a virus on here, and none of the other 3 computers have either.

Only time I haev had to use it to remove a virus was when a friend came around with her laptop infected, I put her hard drive in my system, scanned it with avast, it found the virus, took it out, her system was fine from then. I put Avast! on there too and she has been fine since as well.

If you are worried about spyware as well, try out Spybot Search & Destroy

when you connect to wireless access points other than your own, make sure you select the "public network" so that your shares are not accessible to everyone. <-- if you're running windows 7. check your OS for the appropriate option.
