If i put my computer back to when i first got it,would i loss all the settings for my games. Also programs that i installed like Photoshop would they be changed.I dont want to do this but i have lost a file and want it back.I tried
Recuva and it was not there, system restore did not go back far enough.Would
Steam still be on my computer.:)

if you mean running the full factory recovery it will return the machine to exactly how it was made at the factory, anything you have added programs etc will be lost and need reinstalled

Thanks for your replys,S.T.A.R.S i will try that and see what happens.:)
Is it a free download.

How exactly did you "lose" a file? If it was accidentally deleted, then there are a number of free programs that can be used to attempt to recover it, I'd recommend Recuva.

The downside is that the longer your computer has been used since the file was deleted, the more likely it is that the file will get overwritten, making it basically impossible to recover. If this is the case or the file has been lost by some other means, such as getting corrupted, it's rather unlikely that you'll be able to recover it.

It's probably worth noting that system restore only effects installed programs, registry entries, and system files, so if you're missing file isn't one of those then a system restore will do you no good.

I agree with this 100%, and I also use recuva. One thought was what file did you "lose", was it a user generated file or a system file?

This is the file i have lost,(C/Program Files(x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/call of duty black ops/
players. It just disappeared dont know where or when.I need it so that i can put binds in the game of Black Ops.

I would get recuva and do a deep scan of the hard drive. Choose the file type to scan for as "Other" in recuva . Then select the "I'm not sure" location for where to scan so that EVERYTHING gets looked through. Then select "Enable Deep Scan" and click "START" scan.

A word of advice, this may take a LONG TIME! Dont do anything else on your computer, make sure it wont go into sleep, hibernation, or turn off. Make sure any programs that may be running heavily in the background are disable while doing the file scan. For instance, if you do folding@home, just disable it from running while you are scanning for the file. You need Recuva to have nearly exclusive access to your hard drive.

Recuva will discover deleted/"lost" files and give you the option of recovering individual file or recovering everything found, just dont make the mistake of choosing to recover everything recuva finds.

Once you're finished scanning, CAREFULLY look through the results. I usually choose the advanced view. You can also choose to view the files recuva has discovered by name, recoverable level, etc...

See if you can find your file. Looking for your file may be quick or take awhile, but be patient and take your time. Keep in mind that it may be UN-recoverable depending on how long its been since the file was corrupted/deleted/etc... since the file in question may have been saved over.

(I did this recently for someone on their 8GB flash card from their camera, god it took me hours to search through all the junk just to help them find ONE IMAGE! I found it!)

I tried Recuva and it took over 12 hours and i checked hundreds of files and
it was no where to be found. Thanks for your help.

THAT IS FRUSTRATING!

Is there any way you can get that file again, I'd try and contact steam and see if they will just send you the one file you need. I cant see why they wouldnt, your only asking for one file, not the whole program.

Go to your steam games list

Right click block ops and click properties

Click the "Local Files" tab

Click "Verify Integrity of game Cache"

let it run, it should replace the missing file. Once it is finished, run it again, and continue to do so until it says all is ok.

So far as I am aware, BLOPS, like MW2, stores your online profile elsewhere on a Steam server, not locally, so all you will lose is single player progress, that is what is stored in the Players folder

Thank you one and all for your help. The file i was after is in windows old so with a bit of luck i will be able to put some binds into the game. Thanks again people your the best.:D

The file i want which is config_mp.cfg is not there, this one is config_mp but thats the wrong one.
