I want to be able to access my computer from anywhere on the internet, im going to use Remote Desktop Connection. The problem is, im behind my DSL modem, so it thinks my IP is 192.168.0.65, when i know its 12.160.217.1xx Is there any way i can get the computer to recognize this so i can use remote desktop conenction?

Well you need to understand you computer can have more than one IP. The address you speak of 192.168.0.65 is your LOCAL ip. Meaning if you were on another computer on the same router you could connect to the address for remote desktop connection. BUT if you want to connect from the outside you will need your public IP. To get your public ip go here http://whatismyip.com/ To use Remote desktop though you need to find out if your isp gives you a static ip or a dynamic ip. Basicaly does your ip change every day. If it does, youll need a little program that updates to a website... Let me know and ill point you in the right direction..

I found a link from microsoft that tells you exactly how to do it, however it still does not work. If anyone else has this problem, here is another thing you can do. Get Remote PC Access, and then get an RPC number. It allows you to connect to your computer from anywhere on the internet regardless of routers, modems, firewalls, ect. This service isnt free, but they have a 30-day trial.

Geoff... If you use www.no-ip.com you can get your ip from anywhere through their login page. You run a little program in the ackground of your computer and it updates on a schedule... works great for me... AND IT IS FREE!!!!

the thing with realvnc is it need to be installed on all computers. go to www.logmein.com and on the computer your tryingg to access, which will be your own, download the prgram and install it, then when you want to access it on another cpmputer, as long as its running on yours, you go do it through the website without the need for downloading anything

Im using LogMeIn now, the free version works great(except not the best colors), but you can remote control, transfer files, ect. And you can choice to have the host computer black out or not. Very nice, and no software to install, so i can use it at school.

Thanks for all your help guys (and even though i foward the ports, the programs still dont work for some reason)
