GENUINE PS3 CONTROLLER FOR SYSTEM RESTORE ?

Hi all picked up an old ps3 slim and have upgraded the hard drive, however when I boot to safe mode at the point it says connect controller and press ps button, the system won`t detect my ps4 controller.

Will it only detect a genuine ps3 controller ?
 
I don't think safe mode has the same extensions as the base OS for the PS3 in order to detect the PS4 controller.
 
I have read people with 3rd party controllers like Gioteck having same problem, so I assume I have to buy or get hold of a genuine sixaxis
 
I can confirm you need a genuine sony ps3 controller when in safe mode, as soon as I connected a genuine controller it operated fine.

Now I have the software installed the other 3rd party controllers & ps4 controllers work fine, just not in safe mode.
