general explanation for wireless access point

Heard the term many times but never payed much attention to it. Something like 'turn your laptop into a wireless access point'.
What is a general explanation for it?

Basically its used to expand your wireless network. I have turned a router I have into an access point because the internet port quit working on it. What it does basically is connect to your existing wireless and then turns around and sends that signal out again extending.the wireless signal from the main router.

thanks JohnB. Ya make it sound like it used as a repeater or to extend further.
Is this right?

A WAP could be used in the way it was described above or it could also be used to create a wireless connection from an ethernet connection. For instance, at my office I have an ethernet cable coming out of the wall but have a device that can only connect via wireless. I can plug the ethernet cable into the WAP and then connect to the network wirelessly.

After looking at newegg im thinking its easier to just buy a repeater. Seemed cheap enough. Just don't really need it. But thanks, found it interesting though.
