Gateway & Static IP

My friend has T-Mobile wireless home Internet. The Gateway has an extra USB-C port. Tried to plug a one terabyte external drive into the port in order to make it a network drive. T-Mobile support told me that the home Internet gateway won't assign a static IP unless my friend upgrades to business service.

If he adds a router to his home network, can we assign static IP through the router?

Thank You!

Depends on your idea of a static ip. They literally told you the ip will likely change on the front end. You can assign a static LAN address to your hearts content though.

That being said the ip on my 5g backup hasn’t changed yet from a Verizon hotspot.

Adding a router behind the hotspot doesn’t influence policies in front of the hotspot.

Appreciate the response, beers!

I’m really rusty at all of this stuff. I think what you’re patiently trying to tell me is that we can log into the gateway interface, and look at the network options there.

I do have a couple of pages bookmarked on the Internet that seemed to walk through the general procedures.

Howdy,

It might depend, unsure if they would 'DHCP reserve' you an address or have you explicitly configure one.

I assume you're after an actual static internet address, a lot of people confuse it and assign their PC behind a router a static address instead :P In this scenario it would likely change externally over time randomly like any other consumer connection.

DDNS is a reasonable mechanism if you don't want to pay extra for a consistent address.
