Hello all.

Well, myself and a friend of mine were in a debate about game cracking. We both have a game purchased legally (original copies) yet he said to me that because the game is legal, purchased legally and is an original (The CD's) that if he were to crack it with a No CD crack that it's still legal. I was certain that doing this, cracking a game regardless of what type of crack it was (as if the developer had intended you not to use the CD's, they would have done that feature themselves) it was still illegal? Could someone clear this up for me as he seems certain I was wrong yet I'm kind of sure I'm not?

Best regards,

Breaks.

People can correct me if they want, but I'm assuming any reverse engineering or altering to software or games is illegal and game cracks fall into that category.

I heard the same thing, and I suppose it would be technically illegal, but I doubt you would get done for it if you could demonstrait you actually bought the game in the first place

according to latest copyright laws, its even illegal to make a backup copy of a game that you bought. so yea, cracking it is probably illegal too.

simply because the companies probably don't want to deal with trying to punish people for having cracked games. if they said it was legal if you owned the game, and took somebody to court, they'd fail and loose money plus get there rep tarnished for falsely accusing people of piracy. its easier for them if they just say its illegal completely.

Any altering of how the game operates is illegal full stop, it doesnt matter if you own 10 copies of it, its still against the EULA and hence the law if you change how it runs. That includes editing in-game files (to unlock features or to make it easier ?level skip?), changing the way it loads up (no-cd cracks) or anything else that is not standard upon installation

but owning the software makes you free to do what you want?
or is the cracking part only disqualify you to have technical help.

No, this is wrong, you don't own the software, you own license to use the software. In using that license you must agree to the EULA (End User License Agreement). Once you've agreed to that (installed it basically) then you cannot edit ANYTHING that the game comes with or puts there.

That is what Open Source is for, you can edit that all you want. Mainly becuase it's free and released under the GPL (General Public License) this means anyone can edit anythign, the authors will usually publish the source code as well, and usually encourage users to edit and enhance (linux....)

Hmm

Well, they may say it is illegal to modify the software to play without a CD... But that would really call EVERY mod ever made into question. So, I would have to say it isn't illegal.

Just a thought.:good:

.....I don't understand these people....they would have to use the search function to find a thread this old. Just to purposely revive it? Bah.

Either way, many companies allow mods, as long as it doesn't effect any profit the company could have made otherwise.

Cd cracks are a way for people who don't own the game to play someone else's copy, or a copy they downloaded. Yeah some people use them just so they don't have to put the disk in when they want to play it, but they aren't the vast majority.
